Climbie woman 'still in hiding'

Dan Bridgett12 April 2012

The social worker who faces jail after refusing to give evidence to the inquiry into Victoria Climbie's death is still lying low.

Carole Baptiste is understood to be staying at boyfriend Noel Douglas's Streatham home. But the Evening Standard was told by a man who came to the door that said she was "not available". She went to ground two months ago as the public inquiry began.

Miss Baptiste - a senior Haringey manager in charge of caring for Victoria until she was made redundant three months before the girl died at the hands of her great aunt Marie-Therese Kouao and her boyfriend Carl Manning - is to be prosecuted for ignoring the summons to appear last week before an inquiry tribunal. She could face six months' jail and be fined up to £1,000.

Her mother Barbara, 63, says her daughter had been ill and would now answer the inquiry's questions.
