Commuter misery as train derails

12 April 2012
Travel alert:

All four carriages of the WAGN train came off the rails 150 yards south of Cheshunt station in Hertfordshire at 1.50pm, Railtrack said.

Passengers on the service, the 1.19pm from Liverpool Street to Cambridge, were then led to safety along the tracks by rail staff.

Railtrack said the line was currently closed in both directions. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

A spokeswoman said services from Liverpool Street to Cambridge and Stansted would be subject to "severe delays".

A WAGN spokeswoman said the sliding door train derailed at "low speed".

"One male passenger on the train reported a minor knee injury," the spokeswoman added.

"All passengers, once the line was closed down, were accompanied back to the station by rail staff."

A British Transport Police spokesman said that all passengers were checked by paramedics after the incident.

A special rail and bus service is operating to and from Stansted while the line remains closed due to the derailment, Stansted Express said.

A shuttle train will run between Liverpool Street and Chingford Station, where coaches replace services to and from the airport.

But services in and out of Liverpool Street are subject to delays and people should allow "plenty of time" for their journeys, a spokesman added.
