Couple killed in collision with learner driver

A husband and wife died after their motorcycle was involved in a horrific accident with a learner driver.

Wayne and Jacqueline Nicholls were killed when their bike collided with the car, driven by a 17-year-old girl who was having a driving lesson.

Mr Nicholls, 38, was killed instantly while his wife, 33, who was riding pillion, died in hospital.

The couple, who were on their way to a bookkeeping course from their home in Enfield Lock, had four children aged 15, nine, six and three.

Mr Nicholls's sister-in-law-Lorna Nicholls, said: "The family were notified by police on Saturday of the death of Wayne and Jackie.

"Their children are now being cared for by the family."

Floral tributes were left at Grange Park Methodist Church, yards from the junction where the couple died in Winchmore Hill.

One from the couple's oldest child read: "You will always be in my memory, dreams and in my heart."

The couple who married in 1988, were tended to by passers-by including a nurse and Glen Allison, an off- duty policeman. He gave Mrs Nicholls mouth- to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage in an attempt to save her.

Mr Nicholls was a musician. There were tributes to the couple today from members of his band, The Rapiers.

The learner driver, who has not been named, and her male instructor were treated in hospital for shock and minor cuts before being discharged.

Police said that the car was dual-controlled and had L-plates.

Post-mortem examinations on Mr and Mrs Nicholls and inquests were opened and adjourned at Hornsey Coroner's Court yesterday.
