Digger blow to head kills Tube worker

A tube worker has died after being struck on the head by a digger on an east London building site.

The man, thought to be in his twenties, was killed by the digger's spade as it spun around outside West Ham station at about 8.30am yesterday.

Paramedics rushed to save the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A man in his sixties was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The victim, who has not been named, was working on the £211million Docklands Light Railway extension for the London 2012 Games. Next of kin have been informed.

A worker on the nearby Olympic site said: "I was across the road. Accidents happen, but this is gruesome."

The Health and Safety Executive and British Transport Police are investigating. West Ham Tube station was closed for two hours after the accident.
