Director James Cameron brainstorms on capping BP oil spill

12 April 2012

Titanic director and deep sea explorer James Cameron has offered his expertise to help plug the BP oil leak.

He attended a brainstorming session with scientists, academics and Washington officials on how to contain the six-week-old oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cameron made two documentaries about the wreck of the Titanic as well as the blockbuster 1997 Hollywood movie using a small fleet of underwater robots. The meeting, which included more than 20 top scientists, engineers and environmental and oceanic experts, was described as a "listening session as these stakeholders shared ideas about possible efforts to mitigate the BP spill's impact on the Gulf region".

The director, who also made Avatar, studied physics at college and helped to develop deep-sea submersible equipment for a series of documentaries exploring the wrecks of the Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck.
