Two friends have shot to internet fame after they re-enacted a WWII restraining technique in a viral video which saw one of them become stuck on a lamp post.

The pair were filmed attempting the Grape Vine on an unidentified street in the UK.

In the one minute clip, they giggle as one of them crosses his legs around the post and is lowered on to the floor by the other.

The unfortunate victim, seen wearing an orange hi-vis jacket, then becomes hysterical when he realises he cannot escape from the position.

The video has been watched more than 800,000 times since it was uploaded to YouTube yesterday.

It was captioned: "A way to trick your friends by making them helplessly stuck on a lamp post. Don't try this alone, it can be dangerous."

The Grape Vine technique was reportedly used by special forces to restrain soldiers during WWII.

Victims were left with their legs locked around trees, sometimes until they passed out. They could only be released if two people held each of their arms and lifted them back up the tree before unlocking their legs.
