EC call on impact of Princess bid

THE British Government has asked Brussels for the power to examine the impact on UK consumers of Miami-based cruise operator Carnival's hostile £3.8bn takeover bid for P&O Princess.

The Department of Trade and Industry is worried about the competition implications of merging Carnival's Cunard with P&O Cruises and Swan Hellenic. Carnival chief Micky Arison may be ordered to sell Cunard. The EC has until 16 April to decide whether to refer the UK implications to the DTI.
