'Glass attack' on warden at wake

Evening Standard13 April 2012

Two brothers attending the wake of their soldier cousin who was killed in Iraq attacked a traffic warden after he confronted another mourner parked on yellow lines, a court heard.

Steven Pratley, 24, smashed a glass into Syed Jawad Hyder's head and his brother, Lee Jones, 23, hit him with a motorcycle helmet as he lay on the ground in Battersea, Kingston Crown Court heard.

The warden was left unconscious by the attack in June last year and spent several days in hospital.

The defendants, from Tooting, who both deny causing actual bodily harm, had been at the funeral of 21-year-old James Cartwright.

Pratley, claimed Hyder was "not very respectful", and admits punching him, but denies using a glass. Jones claims he accidentally dropped the helmet, but it did not touch Hyder. The trial continues.
