Goldman tops European deals league

INVESTMENT bank Goldman Sachs came top of the table for European takeovers and mergers in the first quarter of this year, according to Thomson Financial. It advised on 37 deals worth £55.5bn.

Morgan Stanley came second, advising on 27 deals worth £48bn. The total value of deals rose 17% to £83bn.

The value of deals was highest in France, with £45bn of transactions, boosted by Sanofi-Aventis. The UK had 642 deals, the largest number in Europe, worth a total of £20bn.
