Hi-tech search team to find Milly

Patrick Sawer12 April 2012

A private search and rescue team using sophisticated sonar equipment has been drafted in by police to search for missing schoolgirl Amanda Dowler.

Teams are scouring rivers and reservoirs close to 13-year-old Amanda's home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

Using hi-tech radar they hope to rule out stretches of the rivers Wey and Thames where Amanda, or Milly as she is known to family and friends, could have fallen in after going missing seven weeks ago today.

A spokesman for Spartan search and rescue said: "We are doing our best to help Amanda's parents. Our teams are looking closely at stretches of water to make sure nothing has been missed."

Meanwhile, more than 400 callers have contacted a £100,000 reward hotline since it was set up by the Sun five days ago in a bid to find Amanda.

Detectives are ploughing through the calls in the hope of finding new leads. A Surrey police spokesman said the information was being examined very carefully.

Police say they still have an open mind as to whether Amanda was abducted or ran away from home. Search teams are continuing their fingertip examination of fields and woodland around Walton.

Amanda vanished after saying goodbye to friends and setting off on a mile-long walk home from Walton rail station on 21 March. The reward hotline is 01483 653948.
