Huntley to face Old Bailey

12 April 2012

The trial of Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr, the couple charged in connection with the murders of 10-year-old schoogirls Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, is to take place at the Old Bailey.

A High Court judge sitting at Norwich Crown Court ruled today that the pair should be tried at London's most famous court rather than in East Anglia because of concerns that jurors might have links to strands of the police investigation.

Ian Huntley, 28, a former caretaker at a Soham secondary school, is accused of murdering the girls and of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

His girlfriend Maxine Carr, 25, a former teaching assistant in Holly and Jessica's class at a Soham primary school, is accused of perverting the course of justice.

Neither have yet entered pleas to the allegations.

Previous hearings involving Maxine Carr have been heard by videolink from her cell at Holloway Prison after her first court appearance sparked scenes of mob violence.

Huntley is being held at Woodhill Prison, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Neither defendant was present in court today.

Holly and Jessica, both 10, vanished on August 4 shortly after being seen walking near their homes in Soham, Cambridgeshire. Their bodies were discovered in a ditch near Lakenheath, Suffolk, on August 17.

No date has yet been set for the trial.
