In what is a literal interpretation of "creature comfort", seven in 10 pet owners say they talk about their problems to the dog, cat - or even goldfish.

Many claim their pet is their best friend while six in 10 say time with a pet is their best way to relax, according to a survey of 800 owners.

Such devotion may be there for good reason. Relationship psychologist Susan Quilliam said: "The animal-human relationship has shifted. Once used for hunting and protection, animals are now companions, family members.

"Pets are wonderful company, contact with one, even a goldfish, leaves you relaxed and confident in yourself.

"They improve physical and emotional well-being because contact releases endorphins that lower the heart rate and boost the immune system.

"Owners visit doctors less often and are less likely to be depressed."

The research was carried out by pet food maker Hills.
