Scotland Yard has launched a new non-emergency number for London to ease the pressure on the 999 service

People are being urged to dial 101 to report crimes that have already happened or seek advice. Police analysis had revealed that 80 per cent of 999 calls did not need an emergency response. Last year the Met received 2,033,650 emergency and 2,910,318 non-emergency calls.

Assistant Commissioner Ian McPherson said: "Having two phone numbers makes calling the Met easier and our services more accessible."
