Now call me Dave, the lamb farmer: How Cameron helped a local farmer and a pregnant ewe

For 15 minutes Mr Cameron acted as farmer Julian Tustian's assistant until the lambs were born.

And he even volunteered for the task of pulling out the lambs himself, saying he had smaller hands than the farmer. But the request was politely refused.

Last night a delighted Mr Tustian, 39, whose farm is near Mr Cameron's constituency home in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, said: "He was very calm and knew just what he was doing."

The incident happened on Friday as Mr Tustian's pedigree Texel ewe Patsy was delivering twins, which became breached.

"We had to push the first lamb's legs back in again and I couldn't do it on my own," said Mr Tustian.

"David rang me to see if they had been born yet, and I said, 'Well they're actually being born right now.'

"He came straight over with his three-year-old daughter Nancy to help. Nancy waited outside, but when the two lambs were born she came in and held them."

Sadly one of the lambs died later but the survivor, who is destined to become a stud ram, has been called David after the man who helped save him.

Mr Cameron and his family - wife Samantha, Nancy and sons Ivan, four, and Elwen, one - have spent most of the Christmas holiday at their home in hisWitney constituency.

"David has been really busy in the last few months and wanted to rest and spend time with his family," said a friend.

But on Boxing Day Mr Cameron did have one official engagement - he was the starter at a fun run in Chadlington.
