Parliament Square campers moved on... a few yards

Clearing the way: police help take down some of the tents while an activist packs his belongings

A group of protesters and their tents were cleared from a pavement in Parliament Square today, only for a number of them to set up camp yards away.

Officials from the Greater London Authority and police moved about 10 tents from opposite Westminster Abbey to make way for building contractors' vehicles.

A number of tents were found to be unattended and were removed by police officers. The owners of the tents will be able claim them back from the police.

Although the GLA has the power to clear the section of pavement required for access to the square, a number of protesters still have the right to camp opposite the Houses of Parliament.

Westminster council is waiting for a date from the High Court where it will claim that the protest camp, which is thought to still number about 30 people, is obstructing the highway.
