Police hunt gem raiders

13 April 2012

Thieves with sledgehammers stole jewellery after smashing their way into a shop, police said today.

Around eight suspects smashed a glass door to get inside the Moussaieff Jewellery Shop in Park Lane, central London, in the early hours of this morning.

They escaped in a blue Volvo estate and two high-powered motorcycles, going south down Park Lane.

Police said a quantity of jewellery was stolen and added that detectives were working with the shop to assess exactly what was missing.

Detective Superintendent Steve Alexander, from Barnes Flying Squad, said: "This was a brazen burglary - they walked in through the shop's front door after smashing it with sledgehammers."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Incident Room on 020 8247 7931 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
