A 40-year-old police officer was today arrested on suspicion of the murder of his wife, police said.

Pc Ivor Jones was arrested this morning after the body of mother-of-three Maria, 36, was found in the upstairs bedroom of their house with stab wounds.

Officers discovered her body shortly before 8am this morning at a house in Barwick Close, Ingleby Barwick, in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland.

Detective Superintendent Brian Dunn, of Cleveland Police, said Maria Jones was the mother of three young boys aged 13, 10 and eight.

He added: "A 40-year-old serving Cleveland police officer, Pc Ivor Jones, who is her husband, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"A major incident room has been set up. We have sealed off the cul-de-sac where they lived and house-to-house inquiries are continuing.

"We need to hear from anyone who knew about their domestic situation.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard any disturbance coming from the house last night or this morning."
