Pressure rises over gas supplies

BRITAIN faces a 'particularly tight' gas supply over the next two to three winters, says pipeline operator National Grid Transco.

North Sea reserves are running out faster than expected and peak supply last winter was far below expectations.

A Parliamentary report warned recently that severe gas shortages could disrupt households and major industrial users sending the price of gas soaring.

The report by the House of Lords Committee on the European Union accused the British Government and the industry regulator Ofgem of complacency over the issue.

Speaking at the publication of Gas: Liberalised Markets and Security of Supply, committee chairman Lord Woolmer said: 'The committee is uneasy about and questions the UK gas market's ability to cover severe peak demand over the next two to three winters.'
