Quake kills 23 in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's eastern province of Papua early today, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 100.

Police chief Muhamad Son Ani in Nabire, four miles from the epicentre, said: "This is not counting those outside the city because communication lines are dead. Residents are worried there will be other aftershocks."
