Queen’s speech bids to draw line under ‘omnishambles’

8 May 2012

David Cameron hopes tomorrow’s Queen’s Speech — the first for two years — will mark the start of a fightback after weeks of negative headlines dominated by the “omnishambles” Budget and fuel strike fiasco.

Following last week’s local election drubbing for the Coalition, the set piece will be aimed firmly at showing the Government is on the side of “strivers” and getting the economy moving.

Among the new laws will be moves to make drug-driving a criminal offence and to set up a National Crime Agency, dubbed Britain’s FBI.

Reforms of Britain’s energy markets, which ministers hope will curb soaring fuel bills hitting hard-pressed families, are also set to be announced. An Enterprise and Regulation Bill will see red tape cut in a bid to free up small firms, making it easier for companies to sack underperforming workers.

Adoption will get a boost in a family life Bill, while supermarkets are set to get a regulator to stop them ripping off small firms. A Bill on the second high-speed rail link is believed to be dropped.
