Red Sox boss poised to seal Liverpool takeover

12 April 2012

Liverpool Football Club looked certain to be sold to the owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team today after the lifting of a restraining order blocking the rescue deal.

In the latest twist to the extraordinary saga, current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett abandoned their efforts to block the sale in a Texas court. The pair said instead they would devote "all legal energies" to pursuing a £1 billion damages claim over the proposed "illegal sale".

The latest drama came on deadline day for the club to repay £237 million of debt to Royal Bank of Scotland or face the possibility of administration and the docking of nine Premier League points.

It paves the way for New England Sports Ventures, owner of the Red Sox, to complete its £300 million take-over.
