12 April 2012

Royal wedding fever is spreading across the world with international broadcasters snapping up British documentaries on the happy couple's engagement.

The programmes, produced by BBC Worldwide, have been sold to broadcasters across the globe at the MIPTV media market event in Cannes, revealing that the interest in Prince William and Kate's big day has travelled further afield.

One production entitled William and Kate - A Royal Engagement, has sold to 32 broadcasters internationally, including in the US, Australia and Thailand.

The documentary gives an insight into the couple's contrasting upbringings, including interviews with close friends, historians, biographers and well known journalists.

It also recounts the moments leading up to the bride and groom's engagement.

Steve Macallister, managing director for Sales & Distribution at BBC Worldwide, said: "The impressive sales of William and Kate - A Royal Engagement highlight the international interest there is in the imminent Royal Wedding and we have a strong collection of new programmes to satisfy this demand at MIPTV."

Other productions include Inside the Royal Wedding which charts moments leading up to the most anticipated date of the year.

The fly-on-the-wall documentary shows the preparation for the ceremony, revealing the nerves, excitement and logistical nightmares in the whirlwind before the wedding.

It follows VIP guests, florists and outfitters to the Royal household in the lead up to the wedding of the 21st century.

BBC Worldwide has also produced programmes delving in to the historical background of the big day.

A two-part documentary, Britain's Royal Weddings, looks back at monarchical marriages since 1923 and gives a glimpse into how changing social attitudes and national circumstances have influenced what the public expects from Britain's royal nuptials.

Another programme gives a vivid account of the wedding of Charles and Diana 30 years ago, including an interview with TV host and world-renowned fashion designer India Hicks, who was a bridesmaid.

America's most enthusiastic royal fans are given a spotlight in Royally Mad which is presented by Cat Deeley. The fanatics are tested on their devotion to the Royals during a trip to London with the winner being crowned "Royally Mad".
