School that's recovered

13 April 2012

Paola Burgess, headteacher of Emmanuel Primary School in West Hampstead, is delighted with her new school kitchen.

Its installation as part of Camden's efforts to improve school meals means she can now offer children a larger range of fresh food.

Emmanuel had relied on pre-cooked meals that were often cold and unappetising by the time they were served. "The food was cooked at nine o'clock, shipped in, then sat in boxes for a few hours," Mrs Burgess said.

Now the food is fresher and the school is guaranteed salads every day.

"The dreaded Turkey Twizzlers and things like that are off the menu," she said. And the new menus are proving popular with children, with some switching from packed lunches.
