Shoppers desperate to get their hands on cut-price designer dresses camped out overnight in the West End.

Hundreds of women, and a few men, queued outside H&M's flagship store in Regent Street to buy clothes, shoes and jewellery from the collection by Lanvin.

Clothes by the brand normally sell for between £3,000 and £6,000 but the Lanvin for H&M collection costs from £1.99 for a printed cotton carrier bag to £199.99 for a black satin evening coat.

First in the queue was Philippa Levey, 61, from Maida Vale, who was shopping for her 22-year-old daughter Fiona. She said: "Fiona likes Lanvin because she thinks it's a good party look and she is the perfect age for it. She's asked me to buy the yellow ruffle cocktail dress, three other dresses and two pairs of shoes, so I'm going to be spending over £600."

Guangzi Su, 24, who works for an architect and lives in Highgate, also lined up overnight because she said Lanvin fashion consultant Jean-Jacques Picart, is one of her favourite designers. She added: "The quality is so good that hopefully people will not know it's Lanvin for H&M but think it's Lanvin."

Miss Su said she planned to spend about £800. She added: "I'm probably going to spend about half my month's salary."

The 48-piece women's wear collection — which includes cocktail dresses, tulle party dresses and zebra print coats — went on sale in 200 stores across the world today.
