Suspected paedophile appeared on TV show

Suspected paedophile Martin Smith appeared on television three years ago as a guest on the Living satellite channel's popular Most Haunted programme.

Styling himself as a professional medium for two years, he was invited to go ghost-hunting at an historic country house in Cumbria for the show, which was first screened in January 2007.

His task was to join main presenter Yvette Fielding and uncover the mystery of why glasses were apparently being smashed and taps turned on while no-one was present.

Smith, 45, was told to stroll around the ruins of Brougham Hall, near Penrith, to see if he felt an urge to move in any particular direction.

In an interview with the Carlisle News & Star to promote the show, he recalled a forceful energy which was akin to "getting hit with a pile of bricks".

"I felt like I couldn't get out and I was panicking. I got the sense of a young man or boy trapped," he said.

Later walking across a bridge, he recalled: "I got an overwhelming feeling that someone had thrown themselves off the bridge. I had to take a step back because I felt like I wanted to do it myself. I also sensed a baby. What she went through took my breath away."

The programme revealed that someone had died after being trapped by falling masonry, while a woman holding a baby had jumped off the bridge.

He went on to tell his local newspaper that the most terrifying event of the night was going to the toilet on his own.

"It was an outbuilding without any lights. It was the scariest thing," he said.

The so-called psychic, born in North Shields, was living on Carlisle's Sandsfield Park estate at the time of his television debut.

He is known to have lived at a number of other addresses in the city. It is thought he also previously worked as a sound engineer, in a pantomime company and at a holiday camp.
