The Ledbury joins table of the world's leading restaurants

Seasonal dishes: Brett Graham said he was proud The Ledbury in Notting Hill had been recognised by the list

A Notting Hill restaurant is the highest new entry in a list of the world's best places to eat.

The Ledbury was rated number 34 on the S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants chart.

It is run by Australian Brett Graham and has earned two Michelin stars for its haute cuisine since opening in 2005. For the second year, chef René Redzepi's Copenhagen restaurant Noma, whose menu has featured moss, lichen and bone marrow, topped the list.

Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, dropped two places to number five.

Claude Bosi's Hibiscus in Mayfair was ranked at 43, up six on last year, and Fergus Henderson's St John, close to Smithfield Market, was ranked at 41, up two places.

Mr Graham said: "I feel proud that The Ledbury has been included in such an exclusive list of restaurants. We try to keep the service relaxed while still maintaining a high standard and serving interesting, seasonal dishes.

"With such international exposure I think there will be increased interest in The Ledbury." Spanish restaurants El Celler de Can Roca and Mugaritz were ranked second and third in the world. El Bulli, the renowned restaurant in Catalonia which has been given the top ranking five times and came second to Noma last year, does not appear after chef Ferran Adrià announced a two-year closure.

The list was drawn from the votes of 800 industry experts worldwide and includes a wider range of nations than previous years with honours going to restaurants in Peru, Russia and Brazil.

William Drew, editor of Restaurant magazine, the organiser of the awards, said: "We heartily congratulate René Redzepi for the difficult task of maintaining his position as the number one restaurant on our list which underscores his commitment to redefining Nordic cuisine."
