31 January 2002: detectives say they have found evidence of Nigerian spiritualist cults in London

27 February 2002: detectives fly to Nigeria in an effort to identify the boy

14 April 2002: police go to South Africa to ask experts about ritual murders. Nelson Mandela appeals for help

9 July 2002: detectives make first arrest, a woman asylum seeker held in Glasgow

20 September 2002: police reveal that forensic experts have been examining a black magic potion of clay, gold and an unidentified vegetable in the boy's stomach

31 January 2003: experts believe boy came from 100-mile-by-50-mile area between Benin City and Ibadan after examining bone samples

1 March 2003: detectives return to Nigeria to follow up new leads

2 July 2003: 27-year-old man is held by police in Dublin in connection with the murder

29 July: detectives smash a gang suspected of trafficking children, including Adam, to Britain

16 October 2003: police reveal they are holding talks with Crown Prosecution Service. Experts reveal that a calabar bean, associated with witchcraft in parts of Africa, was found in Adam's stomach.
