Trocadero for sale at £210 million

The Trocadero is up for sale, with a price tag of £210 million.

Its location, between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, is one of the world's biggest tourist magnets - but it emerged today that the owners, Burford Holdings have put it on the market again for £40 million less than it was said to be worth in 2000.

The Trocadero contains half a million square feet of commercial space, but almost a sixth of it has been standing empty since Segaworld closed in 1999.

Originally a gentlemen's tennis court, the Trocadero has in its 250-year history been a music hall, Lyons Corner House, circus, casino, bingo hall, bowling alley, club, hotel, shopping mall - and occasionally, a white elephant.

The Trocadero was sold to Brent Walker for £90 million in 1987, but went into decline until 1994, when the Burford property group bought it from receivers for £94 million. Its most recent refit in 1996 took 18 months and cost £45million.

It was to be a hi-tech entertainment complex. But Segaworld, the main draw, lasted less than three years.
