On 13th November there is bound to be an excited hush at Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva, as an incredibly rare pink diamond goes up for auction.

Named The Pink Legacy, it is made up of an extraordinary 18.69 carats and has been classified as Fancy Vivid Pink in colour.

As Christie's website explains: "Only one in 100,000 diamonds possess a colour deep enough to qualify as ‘Fancy Vivid’."

It continues, "In over 250 years of auction history at Christie’s, only four such stones have ever appeared for sale."

No surprise, therefore, that the diamond has been hailed "the rarest of all gemstones" by Tom Moses, Executive Vice President at Gemological Institute of America.

No surprise either that it is expected to sell for a record price, breaking all previous pink diamond sale records.

The last pink diamond of a similar ilk sold through the auction house in 2017 was just under 15 carats and went for a whopping $32,480,500. This worked out at $2,175,519 per carat - the auction house's record price per carat for any pink diamond ever sold.

The Pink Legacy is currently estimated to fetch up to $50 million. As to whether it will or not, we'll have to wait and see.
