Royal Ascot dress code: official style guide reveals all the looks that are (and aren't) welcome at Ascot 2016

Event organisers have released a thorough style guide for this year's race-goers

What to wear to Ascot is almost more important than the races themselves for some attendees, and this year event organisers have stuck with tradition by releasing a strict style guide to advise race-goers.

With different tickets giving access to different enclosures - requiring different levels of formal dress - it's important to ensure your attire is appropriate for your ticket type.

Have a look through the guidelines to avoid a red face on race day.

Royal Enclosure

Ladies

1. Dresses and skirts should fall just above the knee or longer

2. Jackets and pashminas may be worn

3. Trousers suits are welcome but they should be full length and of matching material and colour

4. All straps should be one inch or greater

5. Hats should be worn

6. Headpieces must have a solid base of four inches or more

Gentlemen

1. Black or grey morning dress must be worn with a waistcoat

2. Must wear a tie

3. No cravats

4. Must wear a black or grey top hat

5. Must wear black shoes

Queen Anne Enclosure

Ladies

1. A hat, headpiece or fascinator should be worn at all times

2. Strapless or sheer straps and tops are not permitted

3. Trousers must be full length

Gentlemen

4. A suit with a shirt and tie must be worn
