A digital pizza has been created by robotics experts to help stroke patients regain their mobility.

It allows patients to perform tasks such as rolling out dough and chopping salami without the risks attached to using real objects.

The device, designed by Imperial College London, also allows doctors to track their patients’ progress.

The Human Robotics Group has been working on the project for two years.

It has tested the pizza at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Russell Square and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Paul Rinne, a clinical neuroscientist on the project, said: “Most patients don’t get 40 minutes movement therapy a day and working on hand movement is particularly important.”

The team is working on a cheaper version of the smart table to be used in NHS hospitals.
