“The very matter of being, that’s Mazzer’s true preoccupation,” writes author Will Self in the introduction of Bob Mazzer’s self-titled new book.

Mazzer was born in London’s East End and was given his first camera, an Ilford Sporty, for his Bar Mitzvah, taking his first photos in 1963.

Since then, Mazzer has spent the last six decades documenting life in London and the UK, exhibiting at The Photographers Gallery, The Serpentine Gallery, The Bibliotheque in Paris and Photo Festivals in Arles and Cologne.

His new book is the first retrospective of his work, including photographs from London, including the famous Underground images; hippie life in Wales; life in France; expanding life in the USA and local life in Hastings.

In the gallery above, you can see a selection of images from his new book, from a group of friends sitting in Soho Square in the 1970s to a late night grapple on the Underground in 1981.

In 2014, Mazzer released a book documenting the tube, aptly named ‘Underground’. At the time he said: "Every day [during the 1980s] I travelled to King's Cross and back. Coming home late at night, it was like a party and I felt like the tube was mine and I was there to take the pictures."
