David Williams: Eco option for trips in the city?

Easy ride: the Treecycle launch in China

It's taken cities around the world by storm — now the Treecycle could be coming to a street near you.

Powered by electric motors and pedal power, its frame is aluminium but its bodywork is lightweight, environment-friendly bamboo.

The Treecycle has a range of around 43 miles and a top speed of 15mph. The latest version was unveiled at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum future technology conference in Chengdu, China.

“In most cities cars only do around 15kph and short trips,” says British designer Chris Tree, who moved from Kent to Shanghai to oversee manufacture of the three-wheeler. “So why not create a vehicle designed for these needs?”

Would transport authorities like them in London? Probably not — neither would cabbies. But they might work in outer suburbs.
