Keys to clean living... the washable keyboard for your computer

Turn your work keyboard upside down, give it a little bash and what have you got? Yes, that’s right, a scattered array of crumbs, hairs and sundry unidentifiables.

Provided you don’t share a desk, the small blessing is that the hairs are probably yours and the leftovers from last year’s lunches fell off your own plate. But, should you be a hot-desker, then in front of you on the desk is a collection of little reasons why you’ve spent the past year catching colds.

So the most welcome piece of technology yet — launched in the UK this month, just in time for the winter germ-fest — is the Logitech washable keyboard. This does not just mean that clean freaks are able to give their sticky keys a little wipe. The Logitech K310 allows those of us who regularly tip tea into our qwerty to plunge the entire keyboard into nearly 30cm of hot, soapy water and give it a good clean. Water runs out of the drainage holes at the back, so you can just stick it on the draining rack and let it dry out, and the keys won’t fade in the wash because they are laser printed. The cost? £34.99.
