Our wonderful summer... Londoners capture the city in all its surprising beauty

It was one of the most historic summers in the history of the capital, and had Londoners reaching for their cameras and phones.

Now the best amateur photographs taken earlier this year are on show a stone’s throw from the Olympic Park, after experts at Getty chose the best 25 from more than 500 entries.

The Getty Images Gallery partnered competition was held during the Games and called on Londoners to submit photographs that best expressed My Summer of London through their own lens. Entries were shot on both cameras and mobile phones.

The winner in the camera category was Ben Swales, a 23-year-old Yorkshireman and aspiring photographer living in London, whose photograph, in the Getty Images Gallery expert’s words, captured “a lovely tranquil moment over a busy summer in London, bathed in beautiful light and colour”.

Stuart Wilson – interior architect and passionate photographer - came first within the mobile category for capturing “a busy city skyline that actually appears like a secret garden – dominated by greenery and childhood” .

The exhibition is one of the first cultural events organised by East Village – the new neighbourhood on the site of the Olympic Village. The photographs appear alongside collections of Getty Images Gallery at the photo agency’s pop-up gallery in Westfield Stratford City.

Getty Images Gallery, Unit 1119, The Street, Westfield Stratford City, Great Eastern Road, E20 until 16 December. Free.
