Work of art: Tom Dixon's Melt collection brings new life to lighting
Amira Hashish25 September 2015

Metallic lighting is a must this Autumn.

The warm glow of gold, silver and bronze adds glamour and warmth to spaces.

Tom Dixon is the king of metallic accessories and his MELT pendants really make a statement. Created using vacuum metallisation, the distorted lighting globes were born from Dixon’s collaboration with Swedish design collective FRONT. The light bouncing and reflecting around the uneven surfaces creates a melting hot blown glass effect. Translucent when on and with a mirror finish when off, the internal bulb is visible in daylight. Available in copper, gold and silver (£575, tomdixon.net) these pieces are as worthy of a gallery as a living room.

Bulb specialists Plumen have also launched a new range of metallics as part of London Design Festival.

The Drop Hat is a sleek metal disc that slides onto the Drop Cap Pendant. Combining the rustic feel of a bare bulb within a refined lighting piece, it comes in three finishes: brass, chrome and copper. The polished metallic discs create striking reflections and also colour the mirrored light, adding ambience and drama to the surroundings (£44.95, plumen.com).

Pooky’s table lamps introduce the metallic look with smart bases. The Trafalgar in antique brass (£130, pooky.com) was conceived by mistake. The designers picked an offcut of brass from the workshop floor and turned it into a lamp. They were delighted with the results. Alternatively, the Dexter pendant in copper is ideal for achieving a rustic edge (£85, pooky.com).

For a more extravagant approach, Kartell’s copper or gold Bourgie lamp does the trick. Part of the Precious Kartell collection it evokes the 1960s with a contemporary twist (£322, amara.com). The very bold may opt for the multi-coloured take in the range.

An industrial style can be conjured with Fritz Fryer Moccas pendants made from spun aluminium. They come in a polished or satin finish and pea green or matt black enamel. Cluster them together (£105, fritzfryer.co.uk) for a playful touch. Alternatively, the Aston brass pendant from Grace and Glory has a geometric design (£55, graceandgloryhome.co.uk). Habitat’s Martha copper-finish metal ceiling lights look good as multiples above a kitchen island or in a hallway (£9, habitat.co.uk). Slim and elegant, they were designed by the in house team for use with decorative feature bulbs.

For the outdoors try the Cara hanging lantern by Litecraft at Debenhams which comes in a steel cage (£49, debenhams.com).

Lene Bjerre makes a beautiful Anna lamp with a brass shade (£277, lenebjerre.com) which puts a sweet twist on the traditional office style.

The classic candle stick has been given an update for minimalist living by Oliver Bonas. The Gold Twist (£34) or Copper Twist (£40, oliverbonas.com) is a favourite. Vera Wang also makes a Taper candle holder with love knots for a more romantic image (£65, johnlewis.com).
