For a surprising supper

Bubbledogs

The hot dogs-champagne combo may seem unlikely but why not? The Trishna (with mint, mango chutney and coriander, £6.50) is tremendous with off-dry fizz, or try the K-Dawg, served with kimchi — Korean pickled cabbage (£7). The champagnes come from small, independent growers and chef James Knappett is one to watch.

For a street-food snack

Dogfather Diner

Saturdays at North Cross Road Market, SE22 (dogfatherdiner.com)

Run by the ebullient Cooper, aka the Dogfather, this stall serves a huge range of dogs (£2.90-£5.80), with a rotating menu that might feature The Mexican Elvis (beef steak with pinto bean sauce, jalapeños and guacamole) or The Snoop Dog (with sweetcorn mayo and bacon). Pull up an upturned crate and watch the master at work.

For a veggie dog

Callooh Callay

65 Rivington Street, EC2 (020 7739 4781; calloohcallaybar.com)

It’s not easy to find a decent vegetarian hot dog, but this Narnia-like bar (you get to the back room through a wardrobe door), known for its cocktails, has rustled one up — and covered it in piccalilli. Meat eaters can try the wild boar and mixed berry hot dog, or one made with venison and red wine (choose three for £8).
