Forget treehouses, boatels, yurts, this year's must-book accommodation is a shepherd's hut.

Set on wheels with curved roofs and corrugated iron walls, these cosy cabins that once gave shelter to shepherds are ideal for romantic retreats and wholesome escapes for young families.

Cooking over fire pits, star gazing in the evening and feeling like you’re living in the wilderness is the perfect tonic to the chaos of London life.

Fans of Thomas Hardy might remember that in his 1974 classic Far from the Madding Crowd, Gabriel Oak lived in a wildly romantic shepherd hut - so they've been in vogue for a while.

Coolstays.com has rounded up the cream of the UK’s crop, with everything from remote huts on wildlife reserves in Kent to stylish ones for surfers, perched above the award-winning Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula in Wales.
