Don't end up with a Greek tragedy on your hands

Plane sailing: go Greek but book a package with flights to be safe
Simon Calder10 April 2012

What do you think about independently booking hotels and flights to Greece, in view of the

Strikes and demonstrations against economic reforms began in Greece 13 months ago. Since then, 2.5 million Brits have travelled there, and the vast majority (me included) have enjoyed tremendous holidays.

A minority of visitors, though, have been mightily messed around by the strikes that have disrupted transport, especially in Athens. That's why I caution against booking independently to Greece.

Suppose you buy a flight on Aegean Airlines from Heathrow to the Greek capital, or on easyJet from Gatwick to one of the islands, and separately book a place to stay at your destination. If a strike keeps you grounded in London, the accommodation provider has no obligation to offer a refund.

The room is still there for you; the fact that you can't reach it is not the proprietor's problem.

Book a package holiday, where flights and beds are bought in a single transaction, and you transfer the risk to the tour operator. If flights are disrupted, the firm has to find an alternative - or refund the whole cost of the holiday. And if trouble starts while you are away, the tour operator is obliged to look after you and get you home.
