You know the drill. You’re on a flight, hoping like heck the seat next to you is free but find yourself pleasantly surprised when someone cute sits down next to you.

You want to strike up a conversation but end up chickening out. Instead, you pop in your headphones and start scrolling through the in-flight entertainment options. But what would have happened had you said "hello"? According to a new survey, you could have met the love of your life...

A recently survey conducted by HSBC quizzed 5,000 travellers across the globe about their flight experiences and found that one in 50 travellers met their future partner on a plane.

Questioning respondents from 141 different countries, the research also found that 16 per cent of them formed a business connection on a flight and 14 per cent made long-lasting friendships.

Besides relationships, the research uncovered that 80 per cent of travellers believe they now ‘understand the world better’, 67 per cent said they were more tolerant and 63 per cent said they were more patient as a direct result of travel.

Participants also noted an increase in confidence and feelings of independence which shows the wonderful, broadening effect that travel can have.

So, with nearly 107,000 flights per day scheduled across the world, there’s no shortage of opportunities to meet potential partners on board - for business, for life, for love.

Who needs another excuse to get flying?
