Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is publishing a children’s book based on his life, with illustrations by his artist daughter.

But rather than basing the tale on the excesses he is famous for, the book will tell the story of how Richards was introduced to music by his grandfather.

Gus & Me: The Story of My Grandad and My First Guitar will offer a rare insight into the rock 'n' roll legend's bond with his grandfather, Theodore Augustus Dupree, who played in a jazz band.

The autobiographical book will also include photographs from the Richards family collection.

Richards said: “I have just become a grandfather for the fifth time, so I know what I’m talking about.

“The bond, the special bond, between kids and grandparents is unique and should be treasured. This is a story of one of those magical moments. May I be as great a grandfather as Gus was to me.”

His daughter, Theodora Richards, who is named after her great-grandfather, said: “When I found out they wanted me to be a part of this project, my immediate instinct was to say yes, and I am so happy I did.

“To be able to explore my father’s relationship with his grandfather was a gift in itself. The things that I’ve learnt during this whole process have just been life affirming.”

The book is set to be published in the UK on September 9.
