An Audi containing two young children was stolen in north-east London after their mother walked just a few metres to collect her third child.

The woman left the pair, aged eight and five, in the car while going to collect her other child just after 4.30pm yesterday, police say.

After walking just a few metres, she heard the engine start and saw the grey Q7 drive off from Roman Road towards Uphall Road.

The car turned a corner into Fairfield Road before the children were let out and reunited with their mum.

Neither child was hurt but both were very distressed, police say.

Metropolitan Police officers found the car abandoned in a car park in Barking.

No one has been arrested at and enquiries continue.

Her 11-month-old brother was still inside.

He was not hurt and later found after being abandoned on a doorstep about 10 miles away.

Police have not made any links between the incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Redbridge police on 101. To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
