A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with an alleged offensive message posted on Twitter about Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Captain Moore died in Bedford Hospital last Tuesday morning after testing positive for coronavirus.

Police Scotland said on Monday that a man had been charged in connection with an alleged offensive tweet about the Second World War veteran.

A spokeswoman from the force said: “On Friday 5 February 2021, we received a report of an offensive tweet about Sir Captain Tom Moore who died on Tuesday 2 February.

“A 35-year-old man has subsequently been arrested and charged in connection with communication offences and is due to appear at Lanark Sheriff Court on Wednesday 17 February.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Sir Tom's daughters Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira said: "The last year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of.”

Tributes flooded in for the veteran after it was announced he had died aged 100. Boris Johnson and the Queen were among those paying tribute.
