This is the first photo of the man thought to have killed his wife of 40 years before taking his own life.

The bodies of Douglas Morton, 61, and Carol French, 73, were discovered by police on Wednesday morning at their home in Wandsworth, south west London, after concerns were raised for their welfare.

Mr Morton allegedly murdered his wife in their bedroom before killing himself in the bathroom.

Friends today described the retired couple as “absolute soul mates” who had been planning a tour of Europe next summer.

They said Mrs French had suffered a stroke earlier this year and had initially been told she could be wheelchair-bound but her recovery was progressing well. The couple, who had no children, had spent the last years travelling the world in a motor home and were gearing up for their next trip.

Fiona Lindop, a friend, told the Telegraph: “He was a very bubbly, bouncy character. They were very happy together, absolute soul mates.” Friend Paul Dudley said Mrs French had recovered most of her speech after the stroke and was “getting much better”. Police are treating her death as suspicious but Mr Morton’s as non-suspicious.
