This is the face of a man wanted by police in connection with the horrific assault on a London academic beaten by a gang in his own home.

Scotland Yard today released the name and image of Oskar Pawlowichz, 29, a Polish national who police said could try to flee the country.

He is wanted for questioning in connection with an assault on father of four Paul Kohler, 55, who suffered “life changing injuries” when four men burst into his family home in Wimbledon and demanded money.

Mr Kohler, who is head of law at the School of Oriental and African Studies, needed reconstructive surgery to his face after he was repeatedly punched during the attack last Monday.

In an interview with the Standard today, he describes returning to the family’s £2m home a week on from his ordeal.

After the attack, police released a picture of Mr Kohler's shocking injuries. Two men have been charged over the incident, while a third, a man aged 30, was arrested in Garratt Lane, Wimbledon this morning.

Today detectives described Pawlowichz, 29, as stocky and 6ft tall. He is bow-legged, walks with a limp and comes from southern Poland but has links to south London.

Officers believe he is the same man as one seen in CCTV walking through the theatre car park in Wimbledon discarding a pair of gloves.

Detective Inspector Dan O'Sullivan, of Merton Burglary Squad, said: "We are calling for members of the public, in particular the Polish community, to assist us in tracing Pawlowichz's whereabouts.

"We believe that he may make an attempt to flee from the UK to Poland, and at present we are in direct liaison with the Polish authorities, UK Borders Agency and Interpol and a co-ordinated effort to detain Pawlowichz is underway."
