It was a case of finders are not always keeper for one woman who found a £20 note in a shop.

Instead of a quick cash fix, Nicole Bailey ended up with a criminal record when she found the cash at a One Stop shop.

A customer had dropped the note while using the cash machine in the store in Stoke-on-Trent last August.

Bailey, 23, from Blurton, ended up being quizzed by police and charged with theft after being found with the cash.

She pleaded guilty to theft at North Staffordshire Justice Centre, and was reportedly ordered to pay £20 compensation, a £20 victim surcharge and £135 in court costs.

Staffordshire Police’s chief inspector, Karen Stevenson, asked members of the public who find lost money to "do the right thing".

"Morally, the right thing to do is hand in any found property so that the person who has lost out has every opportunity to be reunited with it,” she said.
