Four men have been jailed for the "brutal and shocking" murder of 16-year-old student Peter Hagan at a birthday party.

The church-going teenager bled to death in the stairwell of a block of flats in Wandsworth after being stabbed as he tried to protect friends from a frenzied attack by a gang of thugs.

Peter, who was orphaned and fostered from the age of five, was set upon by a group wielding CS spray, a knife and a hammer, after arriving at a 19th birthday party at 1am on February 17.

The student, who was studying for a construction qualification at South Thames College, bled to death from a severed artery in his leg after fleeing down stars in Albon House, Neville Gill Close. Two other youngsters were also stabbed in the onslaught.

Malki Ferguson, 22, Jermaal Ferguson, 23, Romell Martin, 22, and Dean Harmes, 27, were today sentenced to life in prison for Peter's murder.

DI Simon Pickford, who investigated the case for the Met's homicide unit, said: "The level of violence used was extreme and there was little or no provocation to spark the violence.

"They were clearly prepared to kill or seriously injure anyone who crossed them.

"This has been a brutal and shocking case," he added.

Darfah Joof, who was fostered with Peter by Yvonne Noah and considered him a brother told the Standard before the sentencing that all four killers should be given life sentences.

“I’m numb, we’re all numb," he said. "We don’t know what to say or how to feel sometimes."
