More than half of households risk making themselves targets for burglars by failing to invest in deterrents such as CCTV ahead of the clocks turning back.

Figures today show 55 per cent of UK homes have spent nothing on protecting them despite a third suffering break-ins.

The survey’s findings have sounded warnings from experts as break-ins are expected to soar up to 20 per cent when the clocks go back on October 26.

The study, commissioned by electronics store Maplin, also found 67 per cent of people leave homes vulnerable by not locking back doors, leaving windows open or not setting alarm systems.

More than 70 per cent questioned do not have basic security alarms while half simply resort to leaving lights on as a deterrant.

Julia Bradbury, presenter of Keeping Britain Safe 24/7, said: “CCTV systems can be affordable and effective options for UK households to help keep their homes safe.”

John Cleland, Maplin chief executive officer, said: “As we approach winter and the clocks go back, it is important to keep your home and your possessions safe.

“Nowadays such preventative measures are well-priced and easy to install.”
