Police and paramedics descended on an area of south London after a hoax caller rang police to report a stabbing and mass brawl among youths.

Emergency services raced to Kennington Tube station at just after 7.05pm on Wednesday following a report a young person had been stabbed.

The 999 caller had reported a gang of young people fighting on Kennington Park Road, just outside the Underground station.

But Met Police told the Standard on Thursday it was treating the call as a hoax.

Stabbing: There were reports that someone had been stabbed but police attended and found nothing

Photos at the scene showed a large police presence as concerned passers-by watched the scene unfold.

The public had been urged not to call 999 unless it was a "genuine emergency" after the attack.

On Thursday morning a spokesman for the Met Police said officers are treating the Kennington incident “as a hoax call made to police”.

He added: “Officers attended and did not find any evidence of anyone injured or any disturbance.”
