A man has been arrested by detectives investigating sexual abuse allegations in the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

The man, 65, who has not been named, was arrested at his home in Somerset on suspicion of sexual offences.

Scotland Yard said the arrest was not directly linked to the actions of the BBC TV presenter.

The man’s arrest comes a day after a former BBC driver became the first person to be charged under the Yewtree investigation.

David Smith, 66, who drove a number of BBC personalities in the 1980s, was charged with five offences against a teenage boy and will appear in court in May.

Operation Yewtree is the Met’s investigation into the allegations that have arisen since Savile was accused of abuse. So far detectives have received around 600 complaints of which more than 450 relate to Savile.
